Kindness is a virtue that many people lack in the world today. We do not have time to spare for other people anymore. We carry on living our mundane life and working endlessly for our own profit, forgetting the joy of giving to others. We forget that we are made in God’s image. We know that God is kind and loving. So, we, his creations carry a little bit of God in all of us.
Although we may only be humans, we have God’s best qualities within ourselves – kindness, love, and forgiveness. Living in a harsh world where everything is a competition has forced many of us to repress these valuable qualities we have inherited from the Creator Himself. But once in awhile, we come across people who manage to stay close to God by spreading love and kindness to everyone and everywhere they go, even total strangers. To many, it may seem like a mystery how anyone could hold on to the goodness inside them while living in a relentless world. But the secret is that it really isn’t that difficult with God every step of the way. Here is a story about a random act of kindness that is sure to warm up your heart and inspire you.
Exhausted Mom Gets a Parking Ticket at the Hospital – Then She Sees the Stranger’s Message
A young mother who lives in Canberra, Australia was exhausted when she came out of the hospital after staying there for several days, taking care of her little nine-week old son. She was obviously under a lot of stress, and just when she thought life could not get any more hectic and worrisome, she saw a parking ticket on her car’s windshield when she walked into the parking lot.
This would just add to her already long list of things that stress you out in life or so she thought. But what she discovered was in fact, the complete opposite! When she approached her car and unfolded the parking ticket, she was anticipating seeing words and numbers that would clearly make her heart shatter, but instead, she unfolded the kind words and actions of a total stranger named Laura.
“Hi, there. I saw your car had a parking ticket on it. I’m sure whatever you are going through at hospital is tough enough so I have paid for you. Hope things get better!”, it read. This mystery life saver had written these words on a pink colored Post-it note and had kept it folded inside the parking ticket. And just like that, a kind and generous person brightened up a complete stranger’s day!
For the young mother, it truly was like opening a surprise gift on Christmas morning. Only this time, her gift was delivered by an angel in disguise, and no make-believe man in a red suit had a role to play.
This angel in disguise signed her name at the end of the note as Laura, but left no other information about herself or how to contact her if the mother wanted to thank her. So, the recipient of this random act of kindness did the only thing she could think of to repay this kindness and show how grateful she was – spreading the word. She posted about this wonderful experience of hers along with a picture of the Post-it note that was left for her on the Facebook page of Canberra Mums. It has been shared more than 16,000 times.
She wrote, “I hope that Laura sees this and knows how much I appreciate her support. Thank you so much”. She had hopes that through this post, Laura somehow gets to know that her kindness really touched her heart and it isn’t something she will forget easily. Indeed, one random act of kindness can change someone’s life and start a chain reaction.
People from all over the world have nothing but kind words and praises for this thoughtful and compassionate stranger. One Facebook comment read, “What a lovely lady Laura must be. Her random act of kindness helped this lady when she obviously needed it. You truly are an angel, Laura”. Another person, clearly inspired by this benevolent act, said, “Needs to be more Lauras in this world”.
There is no information on whether the two women have met or contacted each other after the Facebook post. So we do not know if Laura knows about the good news she has spread everywhere and the endless praise people have for her. We really hope she has seen the chain reaction of love and kindness she started, and if not, we hope she does soon.
There is an important lesson from this touching story that everyone can learn. It does not take much and is never a waste of time and energy to be kind and cultivate kindness. Especially in today’s world, where everyone is busy with their own lives, it is of utmost importance that we never lose touch with our humanity.
You do not have to be wealthy to be kind. Neither does kindness nor helping people in need mean that you are better and more righteous than them. To be kind is to be simply human. Perhaps understanding this simple fact is enough motivation to cultivate and spread this dying virtue. One act of kindness, even to a complete stranger can incite a hundred more, and maybe, it is just the thing we need to build a better world with better people in it. And the way the world is going, we definitely need a better world with better people in it.
