Kim Kardashian, who made her acting debut in Season 12 of FX’s American Horror Story, is now taking Hollywood by storm. Over the past year and a half, Kardashian has not only starred in major roles but has also secured high-profile producing gigs, leading to her recent first-look deal with 20th Television, the studio behind AHS and her new drama series All’s Fair. The deal will cover drama, comedy, and limited series, signaling her expanding influence in scripted television.
For her first project under this multi-year agreement, Kardashian is collaborating with her close friend, La La Anthony, on the comedy series Group Chat. Created by black-ish creator Kenya Barris and based on Anthony’s bestseller The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness, Group Chat is currently in development for Hulu. The show is a co-production between 20th TV and BET Studios, where Barris is a principal partner. Kardashian and Anthony will both serve as executive producers alongside Barris, with the project being seen as a major new venture for all involved.
Kardashian expressed her excitement about the new opportunities, saying, “I’m incredibly interested in telling stories that are personal, complicated, relevant, from my own experiences and those familiar to me. I had a front-row seat to working with the exceptional team at 20th Television during American Horror Story: Delicate, and I’m so excited to dive into developing my first wave of television projects with the team led by Karey Burke and Eric Schrier, and to continue working alongside Craig Erwich and his entire group at Hulu and Disney.”
This first-look deal follows Kardashian’s growing presence in the entertainment world, with her Hulu show All’s Fair in development and her starring role in American Horror Story: Delicate, both of which are products of 20th TV. Her reality show The Kardashians continues to perform strongly on Hulu, entering its fifth season.
Karey Burke, President of 20th Television, and Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, praised Kardashian’s abilities, saying, “Kim is a multi-hyphenate in every sense of the word, who has her finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist while simultaneously helping to define it. Her success in television with our teams – from The Kardashians to American Horror Story: Delicate – coupled with her ability to capture the imaginations of millions, puts her in the unique position to develop and produce stories that will undoubtedly pierce the culture.”
Kardashian’s involvement in Hollywood this year has been significant, with three high-profile projects sold in competitive bidding wars. These include the series Calabasas, which she is co-executive producing with Emma Roberts for Netflix, and two movies in which Kardashian will star and produce: The Fifth Wheel, a comedy also at Netflix, and an untitled thriller at Amazon MGM Studios.
In addition to Kardashian’s television ventures, her collaborator La La Anthony continues to thrive as well. Known for her role as LaKeisha on Starz’s Power and as a regular on Starz’s BMF, Anthony is also a recurring figure on Showtime’s The Chi. Her bestselling book The Love Playbook, which serves as the inspiration for Group Chat, helped cement her place in Hollywood as both a performer and a producer.
Kenya Barris, known for creating and producing the black-ish franchise and numerous Netflix projects, adds further credibility to the project. His recent successes include You People and the acclaimed BET+ series Diarra From Detroit.
As Kardashian continues to build her Hollywood empire, fans eagerly anticipate what the future holds under her new deal with 20th Television.
